When Middletown's Farmers Markets Close, the Local Food Week Moves Indoors

How many hours a week did Middletown's outdoor farmers markets actually run this year? Even in the busiest stretch, the answer was 10. According to the Delaware Department of Agriculture's farmers market guide, the Middletown Farmers Market met Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 204 E. Main Street. The Farmers Market at Whitehall met Fridays from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 735 Mapleton Avenue. The new Farmers Market at New Covenant, 1125 Jamison Corner Road, added three Thursday evening hours from Aug. 6 to Sept. 24. Outside those eight weeks, the total was seven.

Whitehall's Friday market wrapped up on Oct. 2. The Main Street market at the Appoquinimink Library has one Saturday left, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The outdoor markets were the most visible part of Middletown's local food week, and also the smallest. After Oct. 17, the produce, baked goods and farm food keep coming. They just move to four other spots: a chef-run market on Mapleton Avenue, a Thursday-through-Saturday hall on North Broad Street, and two farms along Bunker Hill Road and Silver Run Road.

The week after Oct. 17, mapped by day

Here's how the posted hours line up once the outdoor markets are done for the year.

Stop Mon–Wed Thu–Fri Sat Sun
Peach Grove Market, 709 Mapleton Ave. Mon 11–5 or 6, Tue–Wed 7–7 7–7 8–7 8–3
Dutch Country Farmers Market, 701 N. Broad St. Closed 8:30–6 8–4 Closed
Filasky's Produce market, 1343 Bunker Hill Rd. 9–6 9–6 9–6 9–6
Coleman's Christmas Tree Farm pumpkins, 550 Silver Run Rd. Closed Closed 9–5 in October 9–5 in October

Peach Grove's sources list two different Monday closing times. Its website says 6 p.m., and its lunch and dinner menu says 5 p.m. Either way, Peach Grove alone is open 72 or 73 hours a week, about seven times the outdoor markets' busiest week. Dutch Country adds another 27 hours across three days. The rest of this post covers who runs each of those hours and what they sell.

Mapleton Avenue keeps its food after the Friday market ends

Whitehall's Friday market and Peach Grove Market sit on the same street, at 735 and 709 Mapleton Avenue. When the Friday tents came down on Oct. 2, the street still had a place selling seasonal produce seven days a week.

Peach Grove calls itself a home for "contemporary country provisions, seasonal produce, quick breakfast, coffee & hot BBQ," according to Delaware LIVE's September 2026 profile. Chef and owner Chris Galbraith studied classical cooking at the New England Culinary Institute. He has cooked in Boston, Martha's Vineyard, New York City and Philadelphia, including a Michelin-starred restaurant in New York. Pastry chef Jared Rubin has been cooking professionally since 2009. His résumé includes seasonal tasting menus at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Brooklyn, plus stints at a farmers market, a bagel shop and a cinnamon roll startup.

The lunch and dinner menu lists:

  • The Delaware Dip
  • Smoked brisket
  • Babyback ribs
  • Rotisserie chicken
  • Pulled pork
  • BBQ shrimp
  • A fried BBQ chicken sandwich

The pastry case covers blueberry muffins, cinnamon rolls, brioche doughnuts, banana cream pie, chocolate cream pie and a key lime tart. Delaware LIVE reports that Rubin is keen to convince people pies beat cakes. The grab-and-go and grocery selections rotate daily, and a catering menu that mixes pastry, deli and barbecue is in development.

The market has been a while in the making. The Delaware News Journal reported in January that Galbraith had been planning it for a couple of years and expected to open by Jan. 30 or 31. Delaware Business Now later reported the opening and noted that La Pizzeria Metro, a family-owned spot with an original location in Wilmington, shares the building.

The name is local history too. Business Now traces it to Middletown's peach boom, which began in the 1850s and faded in the 1890s after blight killed orchards that had grown so much fruit it shipped out by the trainload.

Thursday through Saturday belongs to North Broad Street

Peach Grove covers the weekday gaps. Dutch Country Farmers Market at 701 N. Broad Street covers the stretch at the end of the week. It's open Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and it sells fresh produce, dairy and deli items.

Its official merchant directory names four stands.

  1. A&R Bakery
  2. Fisher's Meat Market
  3. Miller's Country Kitchen, the deli department
  4. Esh's Produce

Dutch Country does something the outdoor markets didn't. A Saturday at the Main Street market gave you a three-hour window. Dutch Country's Saturday runs eight hours, with two full days before it. Its website lists those as the regular hours but doesn't say "year-round" outright, so it's worth checking the site around the holidays.

The farm roads run through the end of October

Weekday shopping shifts indoors. Weekends shift out to the farms.

Filasky's Produce at 1343 Bunker Hill Road started its fall activities on Saturday, Sept. 26. Delaware Today's 2026 pumpkin patch guide says pumpkin picking and hayrides run weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through the end of October, and the farm market is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. A 2025 University of Delaware profile describes a family farm that grows sweet corn, watermelons, strawberries and tomatoes. In autumn it adds a soybean maze, bonfires and a children's play space alongside the pumpkins.

Filasky's also stays open after the hayrides end. A fall 2026 regional news feature describes its market as open all year and selling other foods. No winter hours have been published yet, so the daily 9-to-6 schedule in the table is the fall schedule.

Coleman's Christmas Tree Farm is at 550 Silver Run Road, about three miles east of Odessa near Route 9. It runs a different kind of pumpkin weekend. Delaware LIVE's October report lists Saturday and Sunday hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free admission, parking and hayrides, plus a playground and an ice cream shop. Bonfires from September through early November can be arranged by contacting the farm. Sources disagree on whether picking started Sept. 26 or Sept. 27, and none of them gives a closing weekend. Delaware Today describes it as open weekends in October.

Today is Saturday, Oct. 10, which leaves four pumpkin weekends on the calendar, the last of them Halloween weekend. One of those Saturdays, Oct. 17, is also the Main Street market's final morning. That's the only day this fall when all five places in this post are open on the same day.

Then the farm on Silver Run Road changes crops

Coleman's doesn't close in November. It switches to Christmas trees. The farm's Christmas page says cut-your-own tree sales start the Friday after Thanksgiving, which falls on Nov. 27 this year. The page doesn't give a year, so it's worth confirming the date with the farm closer to Thanksgiving.

That leaves a gap of about four weeks between the last pumpkin weekend and the first tree weekend. During that stretch, the indoor markets carry the whole local food week. We haven't found any 2026 winter or holiday farmers market in Middletown. If one is announced, it would add to this schedule.

A late-fall loop built from the posted hours

Once the outdoor season ends, here's one way to put together a week from the hours above:

  1. Monday through Wednesday: Peach Grove for coffee, a pastry, or a rotating grab-and-go dinner. Filasky's market is also open daily.
  2. Thursday or Friday: Dutch Country for meat from Fisher's, bread from A&R Bakery, and produce from Esh's.
  3. Saturday morning through Oct. 31: pumpkins and hayrides at Filasky's or Coleman's, then back to Mapleton Avenue for a late lunch. Peach Grove is open until 7 on Saturdays.
  4. Sunday: Peach Grove closes at 3 p.m., and Coleman's runs until 5 on October Sundays.
  5. After Thanksgiving: the loop shifts to the tree rows at Coleman's, starting Nov. 27.

Mapleton Avenue lost its Friday market on Oct. 2, and Main Street loses its Saturday morning on Oct. 17. The local food doesn't go anywhere. It spreads across all seven days of the week.
